Hans Leenders Appointed as Maastricht’s City Composer

We are pleased to announce that Hans Leenders, main subject lecturer organ and choral conducting at Conservatorium Maastricht, has been appointed as the new City Composer of Maastricht, succeeding Frank Steijns, who has held the role for the past two years. Over the next two years, Leenders will collaborate with the Maastricht Composers Foundation on a range of musical initiatives, continuing to enrich the city’s contemporary classical music scene.

The City Composer is tasked with creating new compositions inspired by current themes, significant events, and visionary ideas—whether commissioned or independently conceived—for both professional musicians and amateurs, and for all communities in Maastricht.

A special event took place on Sunday, 19 January, to bid farewell to Frank Steijns and officially welcome Hans Leenders. The occasion featured a performance by Steijns on the carillon of the Sint Servaas Basilica, followed by Leenders presenting his own compositions on the organ.

His talent and dedication to music make him an excellent representative of the city’s vibrant cultural scene. Read more about this exciting achievement here. Congratulations, Hans!
