Roderik Povel

Junior Jazz

Roderik Povel (1976) is a lecturer in Jazz Vocals, Ensemble and Master research coach in the Jazz department of Conservatorium Maastricht, and curriculum developer of the Junior Jazz Department and chair of the Study Programme Committee.

As a vocalist and composer he likes to explore the progressive outskirts of the musical landscape and has a great predilection for the song from all eras and continents. His work includes the cycle 'When The Caged Bird Sings, Songs to Poems by Paul Laurence Dunbar (1872-1906)', Jazz & Gregorian Music in cooperation with Schola Maastricht, and the solo a capella programme Alone for Intro in Situ.
He studied Jazz Vocals at the Royal Conservatoire of The Hague and Conservatorium Maastricht with, amongst others, Rachel Gould and Fay Claassen. He attended the Kurt Thomas Course for choir conducting at Conservatorium Utrecht and is a pianist. Povel mainly sings original compositions, working with composers such as Niels Rønsholdt (DK) and Frans Ehlhart, and works as a soloist with Studium Chorale, led by Hans Leenders. As a jazz vocalist, he has worked with musicians including Mark Murphy, Irv Rochlin and Frank Giebels. He also recites poetry, for example in English and Afrikaans with Claudius Valk (saxophone).
As an actor and musical theatre maker/ composer, he plays, writes and directs for companies including Het Laagland, De Noorderlingen (Groningen) and Toneelgroep Maastricht, and produces audio tours (audio plays) for various museums as a voice actor. Povel has a private (and online) teaching practice for modern music. Because of his affinity and experience with theatre, he teaches voice and speech technique (elementary voice training and introduction to theatrical text handling) at the preparatory programme of the Academy of Performing Arts.
