In Memoriam Adri van Velsen (1946–2025)
We are deeply saddened to bid farewell to Adri van Velsen, former teacher at Conservatorium Maastricht. As a saxophonist, conductor, and inspiring educator, he has left a profound mark on the Dutch music world.

During his 36 years (1975–2011) as a teacher, Adri founded the department of light music, including the first big band at Conservatorium Maastricht, initially with students from the classical department. This became the starting point for the establishment of the jazz department, which he successfully led from 1982 to 1995 with great dedication. His focus was always on ensemble playing, on making music together as a source of growth and inspiration.

In addition to his work at the conservatorium, Adri gained renown as a member of the Nederlands Saxofoon Kwartet and collaborated with leading ensembles and orchestras. His commitment, musicianship, and warmth have shaped generations of students.

We remember Adri with respect and gratitude.
