On 26 April, Katrien van Opstal returns to Maastricht to work with our jazz vocal department. Dissecting all the secrets of the voice according to the Estill Voice Training Model, our students will learn to know, feel, hear and train no less than 13 structures that influence their sound. See you then!

Katrien Van Opstal studied jazz and pop singing in Ghent (2009) and then specialized in jazz and vocal technique.
In 2015, she received a scholarship to study vocalese, style and songwriting with Justin Binek at UNT (Texas). She is a certified Estill Voice Training Master Trainer. She started as a researcher at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp in 2018. Her research culminated in the development of the 'Mixing Table Model' that provides jazz vocalists with vocal technical support in enlightening anatomical ways. Since 2021, she has been researching the link between emotions and voice. Katrien loves teaching and research. She teaches at the Kunstenacademie Waregem in the jazz, pop and rock departments. At the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp, she teaches voice in the drama and jazz departments. She has taught jazz singers at the School of Arts Ghent, actors at the Secundair Kunstinstituut Gent and classical singers at the Haute Ecole de Musique in Geneva, Switzerland. She also teaches workshops and private lessons under the name "Equally Tuned". As an artist, Van Opstal has had a decade full of performances and projects. She was the inspirer of the Triplettes, played with many big bands and collaborated with musicians at home and abroad, such as Hendrik Braeckman (BE), Roni Ben-Hur (NY) and Justin Binek (KA). For Centerpiece, she wrote her own lyrics to the music of Toots Thielemans.
