Bachelor Composition

The Composition class at Conservatorium Maastricht is a dynamic group of students studying music as sound art under the guidance of Vykintas Baltakas. As a student you will receive individual attention, but the emphasis is on group work. In the lessons, we put students with different interests and backgrounds together to inspire critical dialogue. In the “Music Lab” and “Meet the Composer” series, new discussion formats emerge. We approach the study of composition as active research, with projects within and outside the Conservatorium. The class also has strong ties with professional music and cultural institutions in the region, working with partners including Philharmonie Zuidnederland, Musica Sacra festival, Centre Henri Pousseur Liège and Ensemble 88.

requirements

First round

The audition consists of two rounds. For the first round, the candidate needs to record 2 video’s and create a portfolio that contain:

  • Video 1: A short introduction of him/herself in English: talk about your musical experiences, your motivation to study music, your main subject and why you choose to audition at Conservatorium Maastricht.

  • Video 2: A video recording of your instrumental or vocal performance of a classical or contemporary work. At the start of the video, the candidate announces his/her Zuyd student number and the programme he or she will perform.

  • Portfolio: a cloud drive (OneDrive, iCloud, Dropbox, GoogleDrive, and similar) with original compositions. This portfolio may also include recordings. It is the candidate's responsibility to make sure the documents are accessible without a password or login.

The videos should be uploaded to an online platform such as YouTube.com or Vimeo.com. It is the candidate’s responsibility to make sure that the video links work.

Second round

In the second round, the candidate is invited for an online theory test which determines whether the candidate is admissible. More information about the theory test may be found here.

Furthermore, the audition committee may decide to invite the candidate for an online or in-person live audition after reviewing the video material. The committee may decide to invite you to come to Maastricht for a live audition. The live audition consists of:

  • A general assembly with all the candidates.

  • A creative task.  This task has to be realized withing a few hours during the entrance exam.

  • A short interview with each candidate individually.

Additionally, the theory department may re-invite the candidate for a level test to determine whether the candidate can start the theory program on a higher level.
